Retro Arcade Roller Skates

This project is an example of a 3D model of a retro quad roller skate that has been given an artistic design using an arcade-style theme. The model has been constructed in Blender with the added artwork being done through Substance Painter, which results in a vibrant and colorful representation of the art from retro arcade games along with an emphasis on creating a model that will integrate into Unreal Engine without any issues.

  • The roller skate was created using Blender and has a clean topology with optimized geometric details for real-time performance use. 
  • The textures and materials were made using Substance Painter and included colorful artwork based on retro gaming and PBR texturing. 
  • The asset was imported into Unreal Engine with UVs, LODs, and a game-ready setup. 
  • The final asset is high-quality, visually exciting, and can be used for arcade-style games, stylized environments, or as character accessories. 

Process

The idea for designing the Retro Arcade Roller Skates was based on conceptualizing and finding references with an overall fun and retro aesthetic that is derived from retro-style arcade games. The creation of the 3D model was made in Blender using clean topology and optimized geometry with excellent performance characteristics in real-time gaming experiences. When creating the model, UV mapping was completed for texturing purposes. This allowed the entire surface of the model to have detail applied to it using proper materials to represent the model’s surfaces. 

Next, the model went to Substance Painter for the application of bright, colorful, arcade-style, PBR textures with the goal of having a fun but still “respectable” design that is suitable for video games. Once it was completed, the asset was imported into Unreal Engine, where proper material setup, collision, LODs, and performance optimization were completed, allowing for seamless integration into Unreal Engine games. The completed asset is a very high-quality, game-ready asset that can be used as a character accessory and environmental element for either stylized or arcade-themed video games.
