Vintage Retro TV

Category:Art and Design in Gaming
Tools Used:
Blender, Substance Painter, Unity / Unreal Engine

This retro-styled television has been designed and built to serve as an interactive environmental prop that provides an immersive experience for users, whether they play retro-style casual/social games or experience dynamic interactive environments. The model itself is designed with topology optimization and clean UV coordinates. The model includes a full suite of texture sets using the Physical Based Rendering (PBR) methodology to attach material properties to the asset, allowing for the best use in most modern game engines.

This asset has been developed for complete customization/realism as a hard surface asset that is ready for use in real-time gaming engines

  • Researching references and developing style
  • High-quality 3D model produced using Blender, built with proper optimized geometry and clean topology

Process

Developing the interactive simulator video game is an iterative process that starts with developing a concept and collecting references for realism in the design and functionality of the coffee maker. To create realistic 3D models using Blender and ZBrush, the proportions of the machine need to be established as well as how they would be optimized in the final model.

In order to create the textures that will cover the model, PBR (Physics-Based Rendered) mapping is used with the model being added to Substance Painter, which allows for the further creation of realistic textures as well as the addition of real physical animations for how the buttons will respond when pressed, how the coffee will be dispensed, etc. Once the creative model has developed, the next step is to export all the model elements to the game world using Unreal Engine. The game’s functionalities will have been scripted through Blueprints, while the sounds will also be added to the game to improve the overall quality of the simulation. Player collision detection will also be put in place so that players can interact with the coffee maker, as well as optimize and provide detailed instructions for using any of its simulated functionalities.

The clean, optimized, topography of the model made it incredibly easy to integrate with our Unity project. It is very rare to find an asset that can offer such an amazing degree of visual quality and performance.
